Final for Now

This is my final blog for this assignment, but I plan to start blogging about my life. I learned alot from this experience and realized how much writing things down has helped me. I want to start blogging atleast once a week about what is going on in my life and what my plans are for the future. I would also like to blog about my wedding plans. It will help me see how much I have gotten done and willl help me see what I have left to do. I have thoroughly enjoyed this blog and this class and want to take some more social work classes to see what I really want to do with my life.

Partnerships

I just finished writing my paper and I am very proud of it. I decided to focus on teacher-parent partnerships and how a great partnership affects the education of children. I went to my mother's school and spoke with several of her collegues to get their opinion on the importance of partnerships and what they can do to improve the relationships with the parents of their students. I got a huge response from the teachers I spoke with and found tons of research on how important these things are.

I believe that drug and alcohol addiction are both diseases...but diseases that can be avoided. If someone knows that addiction runs in their family, then the person should be extra careful not to abuse these two things. My uncle is a recovering alcoholic and he knows that he gets addicted to things very easily, so he stays away from gambling and other things that could cause another disease. I do not know very much about this subject, but I would like to learn more.

LGBT Community

I'm really bad at my computer because this is the second time that I've written this post. My internet cut off right when I was publishing the post. I will try to remember everything that I typed the first time.

Looking back at class, one of the class periods and chapters that stands out in my mind is the day we talked about alternate lifestyles and how it is important to understand these lifestyles as a counselor. I have learned a great deal about the LGBT community through friends of mine, but I must learn more if I were to decide to become a social worker.

I have been working on my paper and I'm having a hard time getting the length that I am supposed to have. I had a wonderful experience doing the five hours at my mom's school, but I do not have as much to talk about as I thought that I would. I will figure something out.

I had no idea that all of the topics that we have talked about in this class all pertain to social welfare. I am also taking Health 300 and many of the topics have fit right along with 200. We talked about health problems and aging right at the same time, so the two classes reinforced each other.

Volunteering

I have decided that I'm going to volunteer at York Place over the holiday season. York Place is a home for children. Many of the children come to my church throughout the year for Sunday school and they come to church during the holiday season. My family has always taken part in adopting a child to buy girfts for during the holidays, but I have decided to take it to the next level and give some of these children my time. I am very excited about this. I am also very excited because the Winthrop Association of Family and Consumer Sciences which I am a part of has adopted a family at Safe Passage and we plan to spend some time with them this Christmas season.

I'm getting really behind on my blogs, but plan to catch up over the next two days. This semester has been so busy...and I'm also planning a wedding. I have learned so much during Social Work 200. I never realized that social work/welfare was so broad. My major is Early Intervention which falls under the social welfare category. I really would like to get a job working for Baby Net of York County. I would be able to go into the homes of children with developmental issues and help them with their development. This seems to be a very rewarding type of job. I can't wait to apply and find out if I get to be an Early Interventionist.
